Musk X rolls out Grok custom timelines, giving the crypto community an independent stream of information

X (formerly Twitter) announced on April 22 the rollout of a Customizable Timeline feature, allowing premium iOS subscribers to pin more than 75 topics in the Home tab to create a personalized, single-topic algorithmic feed. The feature is powered jointly by the Grok AI model and X’s personalization system.

The Customizable Timeline feature uses Grok to interpret every post in real time on the X platform, then combines those signals with the platform’s personalization system to turn the topics users choose into an algorithm-driven topic feed. The supported 75-plus topics span multiple verticals including art, finance, sports, and technology.

Bier also announced a companion feature called “Recommendations Pause”: users can now pause specific topics on the For You tab to precisely adjust how often they see recommendations. This feature has already been made available to premium subscribers on iOS and on the web.

What it means directly for crypto traders: separating signal from information noise

Previously, X users mainly relied on the For You tab, but this mixed-style delivery made it difficult to filter information that is highly relevant to individual trading and analysis. The Customizable Timeline feature lets users create a dedicated, standalone feed centered on topics in cryptocurrencies, DeFi, or specific tokens—so crypto traders and analysts can track specific asset categories and discussion topics without being disturbed by other market activity.

Broader context: continuing the financial strategy that followed Smart Cashtags

This launch comes shortly after X introduced Smart Cashtags—Smart Cashtags allows posts to embed real-time price data for stocks and crypto tokens. Within 48 hours of launch, it drove about $1 billion in trading volume, and Canadian users can also trade directly within the X app by integrating with Wealthsimple. Both features are part of Musk’s strategy to position X as an “all-purpose app,” gradually integrating social media with financial data and trading capabilities into a single platform.

Frequently asked questions

What is X’s Customizable Timeline feature, and how do you use it?

The Customizable Timeline feature allows premium iOS subscribers to pin topics they’re interested in on the X Home tab, creating a personalized, algorithm-driven feed centered on a single topic. The feature supports more than 75 topics. After users select topics, Grok and X’s personalization algorithms will continuously analyze relevant posts and build personalized delivery.

What role does Grok play in the personalized feed?

Grok is responsible for interpreting every post on the X platform in real time, identifying its topic classification and relevance, and then feeding those classification signals into X’s personalization recommendation system to generate a topic feed that is more precise than relying solely on keyword matching or users’ interaction history.

When will the Customizable Timeline feature be opened to all X users?

Currently, it is only available to premium subscribers’ iOS devices, and the Android version will follow. X product lead Nikita Bier has not yet disclosed a specific timeline for when it will open to non-premium users.
