Rapper Balen Shah Becomes Nepal's Youngest Prime Minister, Polymarket Accurately Predicts Election Results

ChainNewsAbmedia

Balendra Shah, leader of the National Free Party, achieved an overwhelming victory in last week’s Nepalese general election. At just 35 years old, Shah not only becomes Nepal’s youngest Prime Minister in history, but also holds a unique profile as a rapper, engineer, and mayor of Kathmandu, the capital city. This election is seen as a continuation of the Z-generation political revolution. The prediction market Polymarket also accurately forecasted the election outcome, with Balen Shah leading from the market opening.

Not voting for a party, but voting for Balen

The New York Times reports that in last week’s Nepalese general election, Shah’s National Free Party (Rastriya Swatantra Party) secured an overwhelming victory. Official results show the party won an absolute majority of the 275 parliamentary seats, granting Nepal a rare strong popular mandate in modern democratic history. This election is also viewed as a continuation of the Z-generation political revolution. Last year, Nepal saw large-scale youth protests aimed at overthrowing the old government accused of corruption, cronyism, and detachment from public opinion. This election marks the first nationwide vote after a change in government.

Although ballots listed party names, many voters said they were actually voting for “Balen” himself. Sanjeev Humagain, a political science professor at Nepal Open University, noted, “Many people say Balen is Nepal’s savior. From a populist perspective, supporters almost deify him.” Four years ago, he was elected mayor of Kathmandu as an independent candidate, promoting an image of being outside the political elite.

He presents himself as a “pragmatic” politician, emphasizing practical issues like city waste management, education, and healthcare, claiming he can break through Nepal’s traditional bureaucratic political system. Before entering politics, Shah was a socially conscious rapper. His music, influenced by American hip-hop artists like 2Pac and 50 Cent, often criticizes corruption, elites, and social injustice. Despite coming from a wealthy doctor family, his work has long voiced support for marginalized groups.

Polymarket had already “priced in” Shah’s victory

Notably, even before official vote counting began, the crypto prediction market Polymarket had already reflected the election trend. In the “Who will become Nepal’s next Prime Minister” prediction market, Balen Shah led from the moment the market opened. As the election approached, his probability of winning continued to rise in trading markets, far surpassing other candidates.

In this Nepalese election, Polymarket’s odds chart showed an almost “one-sided” trend: Shah’s win probability remained in the lead for a long time, and the final result closely matched market expectations. As prediction markets’ influence expands in U.S. elections, geopolitics, and sports events, Nepal’s election again serves as a case: in an era of highly fragmented information, market prices sometimes reflect reality earlier than political commentary.

Premier League Tottenham vs Brighton is a crucial matchup, with Polymarket forecasting a 50% chance that Tottenham will be relegated

Tottenham Hotspur this season has surged from Europa League champions all the way to the relegation zone, facing a relegation battle. In the 14 matches without a win, the team has been hit by a series of injuries and a change in head coach, and an ESPN report says that poor passing ability is a key factor. Sunday’s match against Brighton will be a do-or-die game for survival; if they lose, it will seriously affect morale and the standings. Successful survival requires three major conditions, and for a former “pyramid” club, relegation will inevitably cause a major loss.
