France Records 77 Crypto-Related Kidnappings in 2026, Police Expand Security Measures

According to Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, France recorded 77 cases of kidnapping, abduction, extortion or attempted kidnapping linked to the crypto sector in 2026 so far, up sharply from 45 incidents in all of 2025. Speaking at an event hosted by the Association of Digital Asset Holders, Nuñez announced an expanded security initiative to counter violent crimes targeting cryptocurrency professionals. Law enforcement has arrested 200 people this year during or ahead of crypto-related attacks, and 724 cryptocurrency professionals are now registered on the ministry's immediate identification platforms, an 11% increase from last year. The push follows high-profile attacks in early 2025, including the abduction of Ledger co-founder David Balland.
