Innovative Practice of Popular On-Chain AI Agents

Author: William M.Peaster Translation: MetaCat

The original technical meaning of ‘Onchain’ describes the situation where data (i.e., NFT Meta Data) is fully stored on a blockchain such as Ethereum: tokens and related information exist in the same smart contract.

However, a new meaning of Onchain is to describe anything that relies on blockchain in a meaningful way, even if it involves crucial off-chain components. Explore Onchain applications, putting music on the chain, and so on.

That being said, my recent favorite connotation is “on-chain AI agent”, which is used to describe artificial intelligence experiments that use blockchain and encryption technology as part of their infrastructure stack, many of which do have essential external dependencies.

In the coming years, we will definitely see a large number of experiments, so we look forward to understanding and assessing the basic principles of more on-chain AI agents.

Therefore, it is time to develop the habit of analyzing how these agents use blockchain technology in their architecture. This mindset can not only help better understand the uniqueness of the agents, but also provide some ideas in case you want to try deploying your own agent in the future.

Next, let’s take a look at how the most popular Crypto AI proxy experiments currently use on-chain elements in their approach. This will show you the patterns and types of innovation to pay attention to.

Botto’s Art Engine

Botto is managed by Botto DAO, is an AI artist, and can continuously release art works independently through NFT.

The core of this creative experiment is its art engine, a complex system that combines text-to-image and computer vision models with various special enhancement features. The output of the engine is trained based on the curation votes of $BOTTO token holders, providing a crucial part for on-chain components. The highest voted works are subsequently auctioned off in the form of NFTs, connecting Botto’s creations and origins with crypto art collectors.

Therefore, in the end, Botto relies on Ethereum for 1) token governance and 2) art distribution.

Clanker

!

Clanker is an AI token robot designed to make issuing ERC-20 tokens on the Base chain as simple as sending a message. Clanker is hosted on the Farcaster social network and supported by Anthropic’s Claude chatbot. Users can deploy tokens by tagging tokens, specifying a name, code, and optional image or gif in a cast.

After the request is submitted, Clanker deploys tokens through its smart contract infrastructure and establishes a Uniswap V3 liquidity pool on Base, with trading fees shared by users and the protocol.

Eliza

ai16z is an entrepreneurial DAO centered around developing its open-source Eliza framework, which is a framework for creating autonomous AI agents, i.e. Elizas. The framework supports various AI models, including Anthropic, Llama, and OpenAI, allowing developers to customize their agents for a variety of use cases, from crypto investing to video game chatbots.

So, the on-chain elements are peripheral, or optional, for example, you can choose to launch your own Eliza-based AI KOL on X (Twitter) and have your own official memecoin, just like we saw in the early Eliza experiments with Degen Spartan AI + $degenai and others.

However, the potential on the chain here is huge. Starknet gaming expert Loaf is one of the main contributors to the Eliza codebase, so personally, I expect the field of Starknet on-chain games to be one of the areas where we will see more Eliza experiments in the coming years.

Onchain Gaias

Onchain Gaias is a collection of NFTs on the Base chain, where each NFT serves as an AI Agent Vault (AIAV) used to create and store autonomous AI agents in the project’s Onchain General Intelligence Network (OGI). These agents are trained through on-chain games such as Henlo Kart, which not only promote the development of AI but also reward players. This architecture also paves the way for Onchain Gaias holders to eventually sell the services of their professional agents through the planned Armory marketplace of the project and earn profits in cryptocurrency when used.

Terminal of Truths

Terminal of Truths is a chatbot created by AI researcher Andy Ayrey using Anthropic’s AI assistant, Claude. This experiment is at the heart of the recent excitement around cryptocurrency and AI agents, incubated with $GOAT (a memecoin based on its creator’s memetic religion) and 50,000 USD worth of BTC donated by Marc Andreessen. The on-chain element here, namely the cryptocurrency donation treasury that supports the agent, is maintained by a Solana-based multisig and is a secondary aspect of the project’s social dimension.

Virtuals Protocol

Virtuals Protocol on the Base chain is currently one of the most popular ways to launch and collectively own on-chain AI agents. Its underlying infrastructure is very complex and multifaceted, as shown in the following figure.

The core of this project is the $VIRTUAL token, which serves as the backbone of the protocol economy and is paired with various proxy tokens in the locked liquidity pool to facilitate Initial Agent Offering (IAO).

The protocol also uses a unique Immutable Contribution Vault (ICV) mechanism, which utilizes ERC-6551 and NFT to provide a wallet for each agent to store modular improvements on the chain. Through ICV, contributors developed by agents (whether through cognitive, visual, or voice upgrades) can obtain proven attribution and reward distribution through servicing NFTs.

Wayfinder

The team behind the Parallel Trading Card Game (TCG) proposed an idea for an AI-based strategy game called Parallel Colony. They realized they wanted to create their own custom infrastructure, which led to the creation of the cross-chain AI agent protocol Wayfinder.

!

However, Wayfinder is not only applicable to Colony. It will be a universal, chain-agnostic system that uses validated ‘wayfinder paths’ as its agents or shells to navigate and interact with on-chain environments. Over time, this will enable non-technical users to easily deploy their AI agents to various target scenarios, from intelligent trading robots to automated NFT minting assistants. The platform is currently in a closed alpha phase by invitation only, so please stay tuned as access will be further opened.

Zerebro

Zerebro is a cross-chain AI artist project associated with the $ZEREBRO token, and its creator is preparing a new framework called ZerePy to launch the AI agent. This framework will allow builders to easily deploy customized versions of their own Zerebro base models, and initially focus on Twitter KOL features, such as retweeting or replying to posts for token community building.
